RHABSIM Time Series Analysis Screen Shots


Time Series Analysis is a program used to model available habitat over time and allow prediction of changes in Weighted Usable Area (WUA) when limitations on available discharge are modified by a proposed flow alteration. When a long period of streamflow data is available for a gaging station, Time Series can be used to calculate and report base-line statistics through different seasons and/or climate fluctuations.

The screen below is RHABSIM's Time Series main screen with the Run Menu expanded. The process includes entering or importing streamflow data (from the U.S.G.S. or ASCII text file), entering or importing Weighted Usable Area (from RHABSIM, or PHABSIM, or an ASCII text file), setting options and making the run. RHABSIM makes these tasks very easy and provides a rich set of graphs, tables and reports for the user.

RHABSIM's Time Series also allows the user to overlay results files from different runs and easily compare different scenarios and run options.

The next screen below is the Streamflow data entry worksheet. Streamflow data can be set up as days by month, months by year, weeks by year or hours by day. When days by year, RHABSIM's Time Series data files can hold up to 50 years of daily data.

RHABSIM's Time Series has a detailed streamflow graph, as shown below. The user can select a number of display options, and even use a "Locater" to find a specific data value.

The following streamflow graph screen shows the May-July records selected out. The user can show column data as a series (as shown), or stack the columns on top of each other. Users can also view an Exceedence Graph of the same data showing flows and exceedence percentiles.

Weighted Usable Area data is entered into a table. Data can be imported from a number of sources (most often RHABSIM's Habitat Simulation module.) A graph of the data (not shown) is also included. Users have complete control over large amounts of data. Backup sets and variations can easily be saved and recalled.

A very nice feature of RHABSIM's Time Series is the ability to see the effects of certain options. The screen below is the interactive species selection and interpolation/extrapolation options graph. Note the differences that this set of WUA data would have when extrapolation (beyond the known data) is selected as linear or non-linear. The user has wisely chosen linear (green line) to keep the run from seriously misrepresenting habitat at high flow values.

RHABSIM's Time Series program produces full reports on data and results. Reports can include matrix tables of flow and habitat values through the entire range of streamflows. Of course, one of RHABSIM's greatest strengths is the rich graphics. The following graph is the Flow Duration Results graph. The user has selected the 10-90 exceedence percentile range to display.

The next screen below is the Time Series Flow graph, showing the effect diversions would have on the normal flow regime. Any combination of available flows may be displayed. The data can be zoomed to more easily see areas of interest in large files. RHABSIM also has a Time Series Habitat graph, similar to this one.

Another very useful graphic presentation is shown in the Habitat WUA Histogram, where "area under the curve" in an exceedence percentile range can be instantly viewed for a number of Release Flows. Note the Natural regime in blue color, red color for Release Flows that diminish habitat and Release Flows that improve it over the natural fluctuations. The right Y-axis scale shows the actual difference in WUA (the Natural Flow WUA minus the Release Flow WUA.)

TIME SERIES FOR WINDOWS

In order to give the user a full range of graphic presentation and report preparation options, RHABSIM includes the Time Series for Windows program, which duplicates much of the the main program and provides fully configurable graphs (including different run overlays) under the Windows operating system.

Graphs and reports in the Time Series for Windows module are fully configurable for scaling and fonts and can even be printed in color. The Windows clipboard allows easy capturing of data and graphs for direct pasting into word processing programs.
